The man who loves writing and cats

Most descriptions about Nikos Dimou say that he is an Author and a Modern Philosopher. And yes, that, he is…
But if one backtracks his life, his studies, his work and his accomplishments, he will find out that Nikos Dimou is much more than this.
Now, in the beginning of his eighties, he still is a very active man who is not slowing down. A resume of some sort, would be totally out of place here, and it would also be confusing because he never stood still in one place. Poetry, Photography, Satire, Essay, Advertising, Comments, Television, Radio, Translations, Blogs… there is no way of following this through in a single breath.
Among his 64 books, or so, and endless other writings (unavoidably, and from what I know much to his dislike!) I am bound to mention his “tip of the iceberg” book, that goes under the title: “On the Unhappiness of Being Greek”. It has been translated in many languages, managed to become a best seller in Germany, and it is still making a career of itself, some 40years after it was first published…
Still, Nikos Dimou wishes to be known for his wider work, and not only from the success of a single book.
Apart from his work, apart from his success, I think that Nikos’ biggest achievement is that he is being loved by his readers. Admiration is one thing, but when he is approached by people in public appearance it is a sight to see.
They surround him as if he was a close friend and they talk to him as if he was one of their family. One can immediately tell that people love him…
And he… he simply responds in kind!

The Benaki Museum Exhibition

Between October and November of 2015 a part of N.Dimou’s work was put up for an exhibition in his Honor, under the title “Nikos Dimou-The Solitary Multi-Tasker”.
The Benaki Museum proved to be an excellent selection for this event. Its design, combining the classic and the modern, was the perfect background for the occasion. It would be a neglect not to mention the perfect set up of a lifetime’s work, which goes into so many directions…
As Nikos Dimou has expressed himself, a permanent exhibition with his entire work is his dream now. Something that is well earned, if I am allowed to say.

“My” Nikos Dimou
If something would be written on a sheet of paper, without being undersigned, I could immediately tell if it belongs to Nikos Dimou or not. His characteristic is that you start reading the first two lines of anything he puts down on paper and then you are hooked for good. For me, he could re-write the telephone book, and I would still read it from A to Z.
Soon enough, his effortless and flowing style, became my strongest influence into my own small writing endeavors…

One other thing, even as important as his writing-style, is his philosophical approach to life and other people. Nikos Dimou always supported free choice and absence of any form of violence. He is a personality who always discusses gently and politely. And even when verbally attacked, he still continues to discuss. He calmly avoids arguments and he does not allow himself to be dragged into pointless debates…
To my eyes, he has an “Aikido approach” of manners!
Any Honor and Respect he has gained, was rightfully given…
Including mine…
